Measurement and equipment meeting at Friendly House

Attendance:
Jerry Schlater
James Schementi

Summary:
Jerry and I met to solidify measurements for ordering the materials. We decided we needed 150 feet of cable per network drop in the office (and there are 16 network drops) and 250 feet of cable per network drop in the lab upstairs (and there are 6 network drops), so we decided 4000ft of cable was a safe estimate.

Check out the gallery for pictures of the old wiring.

Weekly Meeting - Interactive Training Discussion

Attendance:
Gary Pollice
James Schementi

Summary:
We discussed creating interactive training "applets" for Friendly House with Macromedia Captivate. This will only happen if the schedule allows, which right now looks grim, but that will be determined when the time comes. To procede with the training we need to find out exactly what areas of the software would be beneficial to target the training at.

We also discussed ordering materials for the physical infastructure project. It was decided to order the materials from SMPL Technologies LLC since I worked for them this past summer and know they are reliable and will give us good prices.

New Computer Setup at Friendly House

Attendance:
James Schementi

Summary:
When I arrived at Friendly House, Martina and Jim helped with giving me access to the computers in storage. After setting up the machines in a room with power and displays, I went to work getting them all on a LAN. To my suprize, they already had Windows 2000 installed on them, but some machines I chose to Ghost anyway just to make the process quicker. By the time I left all 10 computers were equiped with Windows 2000 and Microsoft Office (Word, Powerpoint, Outlook, and Excel).

Weekly Meeting - Physical Infastructure

Attendance:
Gary Pollice
James Schementi

Summary:
We discussed plans to set up 10 computers at Friendly House with Windows 2000 and Microsoft Office. I will borrow a switch from the CS department and patch cables from Netops and set up the computers by setting up one machine and then using Symantec Ghost to push the image to the other machines on the lan. Professor Pollice will supply the licenses for Microsoft Office and Windows 2000 if need be.

Site evaluation meeting at Friendly House

Attendees:
James Schementi
Gary Pollice
Jerry Schlater

Summary:
Initially we discussed the issue that I still did not have access to the baseline ETO Software. Also, it was pointed out that the internet connection on site was inconsistantly up and unsatisfactory for using an online system.

After inspecting their current physical infastructure, we concluded to shift the focus of the project initially to upgrading and replacing their physical LAN infastructure and then take it from there.

Goals Meeting with Jerry Schlater

Attendees:
James Schementi
Gary Pollice
Jerry Schlater

Summary:
This is the first official meeting for the IQP, so we focused primarily on goals. Jerry is a consultant for Friendly House. The main thrust is to have a piece of software that allows Friendly House to capture and report information. Rob Contra led the last effort towards this. He worked with Kevin Harris from Social Solutions to decide Friendly House should purchase ETO Software to accomplish this.

The software needs to handle:
  • The Youth Program (afterschool/sports)
  • Food Services (in-house/contracted)
  • Satellite Services

February 23rd is the CMHA (Central Massachussettes Housing Authority) Site Administrator Training. Also, Gary and James will visit Friendly House (36 Wall Street) on March 2nd at 11am.
